6. To determine the density of an irregularly shaped object, a student immersed the object in 21.2 mL of water in a graduated cylinder causing the level of the water to rise to 27.8 mL. If the object has a mass of 22.4 grams, what is the density of the object? Show all work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Density=\frac{ mass }{ volume }\] Know the mass and volume of the object?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 22.4 /27.8 = density ?

The mass is right, but not the volume. The object made the water rise to 27.8mL from 21.2mL Since water density is 1.0 g/mL, then the amount the water went up from is the object volume. So you subtract 27.8mL to 21.2mL to get the volume of th eobject Your answer should be units g/mL

27.8-21.2=6.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea, that is correct.

thanks you
