Help me solve this absolute value equation?
\[2\left| x+2 \right|-1=5\]
\[2\left| x+2 \right|=5+1=6\] \[\left| x+2 \right|=\frac{ 6 }{ 2 }=3\] \[x+2=\pm3\] find x
x=1
yes, remember the abs value can have a + or - value and be true, like the last line above
what about the equation \[2\left| x+2 \right|-1=-5\]
I got zero but i know that's not the answer
--solve for the absolute value quantity.\[\left| something \right| = c\] --set that 'something' equal to + or - c \[something = +c~~~~or~~~~something=-c\]
solve both of those for x...
would it be -1?
you should get 2 answers ,
My first answer was x=1, I'm trying to solve the second equation now. I'm unsure of the answer because I know I'm taking the wrong steps
that one is a bit different, just looked at it
Yes, the second equation is negative
The absolute value is greater than or equal to zero, so that one will not have any answers
my options for that equation is -1 or -5
\[2*\left| x+2 \right|-1=-5\] \[\left| x+2 \right|=-2\] false, no solution
@surjithayer
x+2=3,find x x+2=-3,find x
