What process is occurring when the color appears in the flame?

the colour come from the electrons of elements which are excited by the thermal energy of the flame. this electrons "orbit" oround quantized energy levels, when an electron is ecxited it "jumps" from a level to another (which has more energy), when it jumps back to the previous level (losing energy) it emits a photon. the frequency of the emitted photons is the colour of the flame. very few words to explain a quantistic process.. hope this help you. welcome to open study ;)

This may be a physical change, you are just exciting electrons; however how do we distinguish this from a chemical change? Sometimes when you heat a compound it does cause a chemical change, and becomes something different in the presence of heat.

well, chemical changes means bonds between elements or compounds. maybe during the heating process something new has been created, this is a chemical change. but if not, u just done some temporary physical change.. check the black body on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_body this process was finally understood from Max Planck i think..the beginning of the quantum teory. thank u very much for the compliment, i appreciate.. if u need something, ask..
