A semipermeable membrane has a 4 percent salt solution on the right side and a 12 percent salt solution on the left side. What will most likely occur?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. Osmosis of water from the right to the left B. Facilitated diffusion of salt from the left to the right C. Passive transport of salt from the right to the left D. Osmosis of water from the left to the right

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Water would move from right to the left because passive transport moves water from high water concentration to low concentration, and the side with less salt would have more water. SO the answer is A

OpenStudy (greatlife44):

Remember things are more likely to go from where there is a higher concentration to where there is a lower concentration. Not necessarily related but If there are more gas molecules of substance A on one side, than B, then naturally molecules are going to go form A to B by diffusion. |dw:1441743140154:dw| @Rushwr wouldn't this be considered passive transport because this is in lines with the concentration gradient? is this considered osmosis due to the presence of a semipermeable membrane?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

I thought like that because in osmosis they are specifically talking about a semi permeable membrane. But B is also correct like right? Facilitated diffusion uses integral membrane proteins to move polar or charged substances across the hydrophobic regions of the membrane. If these proteins aren't present the most likely to happen is A right?

it was A thank you guys :D
