FAN AND MEDAL FOR FIRST 3 GOOD ANSWERS Which of the following staments correctly distinguishes between an acidic and a basic solution? A) A basic solution has a higher concentration of hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions. B) A basic solution has equal concentration of hydroxide ions and hydrogen ions. C) An acidic solution has equal concentrations of hydroxide ions and hydrogen ions. D) An acidic solution has a higher concentration of hydroxide ions than hydrogen ions.
An acidic solution has only hydrogen ions and a basic solution has only hydroxide ions.
D
When a solution has higher no. of hydroxide ions it is a basic solution. eg: Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). So in a basic solution the hydrogen ion content is lesser than the hydroxide ion content. When a solution has higher hydrogen ion content it is know as an acidic solution. eg:HCl In acidic solutions the hydroxide ion content is lesser. The hydrogen ion and the hydroxide ion content become equal only in neutral solutions.
So B and C are wrong because only neutral solutions can have equal amounts of hydrogen and hydroxide ions. D is wrong because an acidic solution contain more of hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions. So the answer would be A . So I agree with u @ineedhelppiz
