Chromium has four naturally occurring isotopes; Cr-50, Cr-52, Cr-53, and Cr-54. If the average atomic mass of chromium is 51.996 amu, which isotope of chromium is found in the greatest abundance? A)Cr-50 B)Cr-52 C)Cr-53 D)Cr-54

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Zale101

OpenStudy (zale101):

The chromium that is closest to the atomic mass has the greatest abundance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sooo the answer is B?

OpenStudy (zale101):

Correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k, thanks

OpenStudy (zale101):

Anytime.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me with one more plz

OpenStudy (zale101):

Post it.

How many protons would the element with the atomic number 10 contain? A)3 B)5 C)8 D)10 __________________my answer did i get it right?

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

You have to look at the value of the average atomic mass how close to any of the values of the mass of the individual isotopes. That will tell you that that isotope has the chances to be the more abundant. This is not 100% correct, because in this case if you have 33% of the Cr-50, 65% of the Cr-53 and 2% of the Cr-52 you will have an average mass of 51.99 and the more abundant will be the Cr-53

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you @Cuanchi , @Rushwr ^.^

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@rushwr have to be a little careful. The atomic number is the number of protons in the element's nucleus. The atomic number is also the number of electrons if the atom has a net charge of 0, but not if it has gained or lost one or more electrons. As long as the proton count stays the same, it is the same element. Electron count can change without changing the identity of the element.
