In an extraction, what is an emulsion and how can it be avoided?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids that are normally immiscible (unmixable or unblendable). One method that is often used to break up an emulsion is to add some salt to increase the ionic strength of the aqueous layer. What do u think @Photon336 @Woodward ?

\(\Large\color{blue}{Emulsion} \) A colloid in which small particles of one liquid are dispersed in another liquid. Usually emulsions involve a dispersion of water in an oil or a dispersion of oil in water, and are stabilized by an EMULSIFIER. Common Emulsifier are substances, such as detergents, that have lyophobic and lyophilic parts in their molecules.

say, you got two immiscible liquids, but unfortunately they have same densities.. so if you try to extract any essential component from one of the liquid using another liquid, b'cause of same density they tend to form emulsion... emulsion is a suspended from of one liquid/solid in a liquid that are not soluble. so to break the emulsion you need to increase the density of any of the liquid. by adding salt/any other or if the density difference between two liquids is above 0.3 then you can apply centrifuging..it will not work if the difference is below 0.3 And you can also put that emulsion in a hot water bath and leave it for 3o mins.. i am pretty sure you can see separation. U'r Welcome...

Thanks everyone :)
