Which statement correctly describes a chemical equilibrium? @texaschic101 @paki @Nnesha @zarkon @zepdrix
a-It must take place in an open system. b-The mass of the reactants and the mass of the products are not equal. c-It is affected by the addition of a catalyst. d-It does not involve a reversible reaction. e-The concentrations of reactants and products are equal.
@undeadknight26
what do you think is the correct answer and why?
i think b but im not completly sure.. im taking online classes and have no study material
@Cuanchi
yea b can be true but you can have a particular equilibrium in which the mass of the products and the reactants are the same (it is not very common but it is possible). What about the other options? why do you think they are wrong?
equilibrium, what does that sound like? Equal, yes? And if something is equal, it means what?
Equal amounts of apples and oranges...equal amounts of peanuts and almonds. equal amount of boys and girls.
so is the answer E? @abb0t @cuanchi
The chemical equilibrium is when the speed of the forward reaction is equal to the speed of the reverse reaction. The position of the equilibrium is not affected by a catalyst. The concentrations of reactants and products can be any given value. The only option is the one that talks about the open system. A dynamic equilibrium occurs when you have a reversible reaction in a closed system. Nothing can be added to the system or taken away from it apart from energy. At equilibrium, the quantities of everything present in the mixture remain constant, although the reactions are still continuing. This is because the rates of the forward and the back reactions are equal. http://www.chemguide.co.uk/physical/equilibria/introduction.html
yes.
