If you react Potassium permanganate with the following chemicals - would it stay purple or change color? If it does stay purple, would the Potassium permanganate sink or float? ------------------------------------------ Ethanol Ethylene Methanol Cyclohexane Acetone Ethylene glycol
So potassium permangate is a really good oxidizer - it will "steal" electrons from any compound it can. It will change from purple when it reacts and since these are all organic molecules, it will oxidize some of them - look here for the possible reactions. http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Organic_Chemistry/Reactions/Oxidation_and_Reduction_Reactions/Oxidation_of_Organic_Molecules_by_KMnO4 if it doesn't react, compare the densities, the heavier compound will sink to the bottom.
I looked online, but it doesn't help me
