Looking online did not help me If you react Potassium permanganate with the following chemicals - would it stay purple or change color? If it does stay purple, would the Potassium permanganate sink or float? ------------------------------------------ Ethanol Ethylene Methanol Cyclohexane Acetone Ethylene glycol

OpenStudy (photon336):

Well, if i remember from my days in organic chem lab, we use \[KMNO_{4}\] to determine whether there's an alkene or the presence of an alkene. the KMNO_4 would react with the double bond and the solution would change from purple to colorless to indicate that the KMNO4 reacted with the double bond.

OpenStudy (photon336):

from my experience, it would definitely change color when reacted with ethylene

OpenStudy (photon336):

it's a strong oxidizer so it's gonna steal electrons from wherever it can, double bonds especially
