Write a balanced equation for the complete combustion of methane, CH4

OpenStudy (aaronq):

methane + oxygen gas \(\rightarrow\) carbon dioxide + water + energy

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@karlz_jo aaronq has sketched out the components of the combustion reaction, but that is not yet a balanced equation. You need to expand on it to show the physical state of each reactant and product, and indicate the number of each atom or ion involved.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

An example for the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen to form water: \[2H_2(g)+O_2(g) \rightarrow 2H_2O(l)\] the states of each reactant and product are shown, and the number of atoms balances across the reaction arrow. 2*2=4 H atoms on the left, 2*2=4 on the right. 2 O atoms on the left, 2 on the right.
