not entirely sure, but I believe it has to do with the electrochemical series in order for a metal to react with HCl, it has to have a greater electric potential than hydrogen @JoannaBlackwelder please check me on this

@Vocaloid is right. the metals need to have a lower reduction potential than the reduction potential of hydrogen gas formation. Look at this table, everything underneath 0.0 V can reduce \(H^+\) to form \(H_2\) http://www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/k12/evaluation/chem3202/standardreductionpotentials.pdf
