Which of the following atoms has no electrons? Will medal and fan! H- He 2+ H He

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is D. Helium has no electrons.

Attached is a copy of my element chart with charges. As you can see Hydrogen has electrons which gives it a positive charge where Helium hasn't any electrons so it has no charge.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Atoms which are not ionized have a net charge of 0. The only way to get an atom with no electrons is to have an atom which has a net charge other than 0. An atom with no electrons will still have at least 1 proton, which will give it a net positive charge.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

There are a lot of helium atoms out there that will be very surprised to learn that they have no electrons :-) Helium is the first noble gas, which means that its valence electrons completely fill the outer shell and make it rather unreactive.

OpenStudy (jebonna):

The answer is He 2+ This is because Helium is a noble gas and has two electrons on its outer shell. This means if you remove two electrons, it will be more positive than negative due to there being now more protons then electrons. The 2+ signifies two electrons have been taken away from the element, leaving it with 0 electrons, 2 protons and 2 neutrons.
