AP Chem help! How can I get the net ionic equation for the molecular equation Ca(OH)2+Na2SO4-->CaSO4+Na2(OH)2? I don't want the answer; I only want to be helped along with solving it :).
hi i'll try to help!! even though i'm not really good but i've learned this topic before. okay so first of all Na2(OH)2 should be 2NaOH. just putting that 2 next to the Na in front c:
so it's Ca(OH)2(aq)+Na2SO4(aq)-->CaSO4(s)+2NaOH(aq). also get rid of the extra 2 at the end. Na2(OH)2 isn't a thing ;w; also i added (aq) and (s) which mean soluble and insoluble respectively. insoluble means it's the precipitate or the solid that forms as a result of the reaction! and the solid that forms can't be dissolved in water, which is what soluble means.
So to get the net ionic equation, you have to go through the complete ionic equation. To get the complete ionic equation, split up the compounds into their ions, but don't split up the solid bc that's the precipitate. you would split up Ca(OH)2(aq) into this: Ca2+(aq) + 2 OH-(aq). so you have to remember the ion form of these elements as you're splitting them up. now try splitting the rest of the compounds in the reaction! (except CaSO4, the solid)
now i have to go cuz sleep lol so here's the rest of what to do: Now you've got all these split up ions and 1 solid. You should see that there will be 2 of the same ions on opposite sides of the arrow. whatever you see of the same on both sides of the arrow, cancel out. it's like math: 2 + 3 = 3 + 2. there are 2's and 3's on both sides of the equal sign, so you cancel them out and they disappear. you cancel out these ions because they're spectator ions, they float around in the solution doing nothing in the reaction. ok so the net ionic equation will look like this: ion + ion -> solid . gl and bye!
