Chemistry PLEASE HELP!!! Which of the following compounds will not produce O2 gas when it decomposes? K2O LiOH LiClO3 HgO

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

@zpupster

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

any ideas @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

I;m pretty sure that LiCl03 will produce oxygen and so will HgO.

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

i was thinking K2O

OpenStudy (welshfella):

my guess would be LiOH but i'm not entirely sure

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

why would you pick that one if i may ask?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

wel i know that NaOH will not produce oxygen and LiOH is a similar compound

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

yea thats true

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

any ideas @zpupster

OpenStudy (that_bmx_kid):

you were right @welshfella

OpenStudy (zpupster):

2K2O-->2K+ + O2

Hey there. I will disagree with the HgO compound, as Henry Cavendish( if not mistaking the name) was the first to produce oxygen artificially by decomposing HgO. Lithium Hydroxide produces water and lithium or water and lithium oxide, that means oxygen is not formed.

You guessed right. LiOH will not decompose of O2 gas. It will decompose into Li+ and OH-
