i'm pretty confused w/ covalent bonds: is simple molecular structure a non polar bond and is covalent lattice a polar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Covalent is where atoms share electrons A covalent bond can be polar or non-polar A lattice is an ionic bond

OpenStudy (realsiege):

okay, though the power point that i got in school says that there's simple molecular covalent bond and giant lattice covalent bond. so can polar and non-polar bonds be both simple and latticed? thanks anyway!

Originally you asked "is simple molecular structure a non polar bond and is covalent lattice a polar?" A simple molecular structure can be polar or non polar. Non polar means the electrons are shared equally between two atoms therefore the atoms have the same charge Polar means that the electrons are not shared equally, meaning that the electron is more likely to be by one atom over another. For example in H2O the electrons spend more by the O atom and less time by the H atom. Therefore, the O will more of a negative charge and the H more of a positive charge. A typical lattice structure are ionic bonds. An example of an Ionic bond is NaCl where the Na donated an electron to Cl, hence Na is positive and Cl is negative (meaning clearly positive and clearly negative as opposed to more positive or more negative.) http://www.docbrown.info/page04/4_72bond4.htm discusses a "a giant covalent lattice" Perhaps a giant covalent lattice is held tightly together because of it's polarity (there is an atrractive force between the opposite partial charges). Meaning if it would be non polar there wouldn't be the opposing partial charges to hold it together.

thanks!
