A rectangle is 12 feet long and 5 feet wide. If the length of the rectangle is increased by 25% and the width is decreased by 20%, what is the change in the area of the rectangle? The change in the area of the rectangle is______square feet.

OpenStudy (radar):

I would start by calculating the area in sq ft before the dimension changes. Area = length times width =12 time 5 = 60 sq ft.

OpenStudy (radar):

Then compute the area with the dimension changes. The length of 12 feet is increased by 25% or 25/100 or 1/4, 1/4 of 12 is 3, so the new length is 15 ft. Now figure the new width which has decreased by 20%.

OpenStudy (radar):

Do the width similarly. 20% if 20/100 or 1/5 ........can you continue?

OpenStudy (radar):

The question has now been closed, but I still will continue. 1/5 of 5 is 1 ft. the width of 5 will change to 4 ft. The new area is 15 times 4 or 60 sq fte The new area is also 60 square ft, thus no change. 0
