a.) The following reaction takes place in an acidic solution MnO4-(aq) + Cl-(aq) --> Mn^2+ +Cl2(g)(unbalanced) i.) Write the reduction and oxidation half-reactions(without electrons) ii.) Balance the equations for atoms O and H using H2O and H+ iii.)Balance the charge in the half reactions iv.) Balance the charge in the half reactions v.) Multiply each half-reaction by the proper number to balance charges in the reaction vi.) Add the equations and simplify to get a balanced equation.

Use the acronym OIL-RIG, which stands for Oxidation Is the Loss of electrons and Reduction Is Gain of electrons. Are you sure the given equation is not miscopied?

OpenStudy (msambergrace):

I guess the equation should MnO4-(aq) + Cl-(aq) --> MnO2+ +Cl2(g) And the answer Wud be the 2MnO4-(aq) + 6Cl-(aq) + 8H+ --> 2MnO2+ 3Cl2(g) + 4H2O
