How many neutrons are in the isotope carbon -14? 6 8 12 14

OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

its 6 because you take the number of neutrons carbon 14 has and subtract one. thats what the negative sign means

OpenStudy (maddisongruby):

that is if its a negative and not just saying what the isotope is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!!!!

OpenStudy (jebonna):

The answer is actually 8, because when looking at isotopes the number it has next to it will be its mass number. Mass number of an element is protons + neutrons, and the number of protons will never change for an element. So if the element we are looking at is carbon, it will always have 6 protons. So all you have to do to work out the number of neutrons is do the mass number (which is next to the isotope element) minus its protons. So, 14 - 6 = 8 neutrons so the answer is 8 :)

OpenStudy (ramzy197):

the - is just a dash :) its not a negative sign

now you tell me!! :)
