OpenStudy (theloshua):

Which of the following contains a total of eight carbons? a.) nonane b.) dimethylpropane c.) 2-methyl-4-heptyne d.) 4-methyl-decane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm thinking c. but idk for sure. hope it helps :) good luck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah im pretty sure it's c

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

2-methyl-4-heptyne has a molecular formula of C8H14, so that would be an excellent choice.

OpenStudy (photon336):

nonane = 9 carbons you should just draw each structure out and see let's do that

OpenStudy (photon336):

This is asking for which carbon contains a total of 8 carbons. so there must be 8 carbons in total let's look at the naming system first. 2-methyl-4-heptyne hep = 7 carbons in our chain. this means our longest carbon chain is 7 carbons long. 2-methyl, means the methyl group CH3 is on carbon 2. yne means we have a triple bond, and 4 tells us that our triple bond is between carbons 4-5. take a look at what I wrote below

OpenStudy (photon336):

we first start with our longest chain. hep means there are 7 carbons in total. |dw:1448483969503:dw|

OpenStudy (photon336):

then we fill in the substituents 2-methyl means the methyl group ch3 goes at carbon 2 and 4 yne means a triple bond goes between carbons 4 and 5 |dw:1448484041910:dw|
