Why is hydrogen chloride (HCl) polar?

OpenStudy (photon336):

well. Let's look at this. polar means that one side of the molecule has more electrons. or the electrons spend more time at one particular part of the molecule than they do the other. this has something to do with a concept called electronegativity. the more electronegative an atom is it's going to really want those electrons. in H-Cl, we see that chlorine is in group 7. chlorine wants one more electron so badly because it has to fill it's octet. so it makes a bond with hydrogen and the electron spends more time at the chlorine.
