for the system shown below, what are the coordinates of the solution that lies in quadrant I? 3y^2-5x^2=8 3y^2-x^2=24 @ganeshie8 @pooja195 @ParthKohli @Kainui

@Nnesha

Nnesha (nnesha):

use the elimination method

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I do that?

Nnesha (nnesha):

for elimination method you need to get same coefficient for one of the variable with opposite sign

Nnesha (nnesha):

3y^2-5x^2=8 3y^2-x^2=24 3y^2 is same to cancel it out you should multiply one of the equation by negative one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I did that now what do I do next?

Nnesha (nnesha):

then eliminate did you multiply first or 2nd equation by one ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first one

Nnesha (nnesha):

alright( 3y^2-5x^2=8 ) times -1 what did you get after multiplying by -1 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats were I'm stuck I can't get an answer

Nnesha (nnesha):

well you will not get the answer by just multiplying the equation by -1

Nnesha (nnesha):

\[\rm -1(3y^2-5x^2=8)\] distribute parentheses by negative one let me now what yo uget

Nnesha (nnesha):

multiply all terms in the parentheses by negative one

Nnesha (nnesha):

and if you don't want to do any work then you can use calculator :/ https://www.desmos.com/ type both equations
