Check my answer please? Will medal (posting question below)

OpenStudy (thecuteone25):

what is the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(3x ^{3}-7x ^{2}+12)-(3x ^{3}+6x ^{2}+10x)\] Simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is \[-6x ^{3}+x ^{2}-10x-12\]

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

I got something different. What was the first step you did?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guessed this one out of the choice I had. You want me to how you the other choice @FortyTheRapper

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

We can work it out if you want. It's probably 2... 3 steps at the most

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes please! I need to learn how to do these

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Ok, so we have (3x3−7x2+12)−(3x3+6x2+10x) Step 1.) Distribute the negative Would you happen to know how to distribute the negative into the (3x^3 + 6x^2 + 10x)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribute that invisible negative one?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So itll be -3x^3-6x^2-10x

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Perfect! So now we have 3x^3−7x^2+12−3x^3-6x^2-10x Step 2.) Combine like terms. Do you know how to find which terms are alike?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup one second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just to make sure I would be multiplying 3x^3*3x^3?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

When you combine like terms, you only use addition So for the ^3 like terms, you identified them as the 3x^3 and the -3x^3, right? So you would do (3x^3) + (-3x^3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They cancel each other out right?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Right! It turns into 3x^3 - 3x^3 since a +(-) makes a -

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right and then what would I do?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Alright, so they canceled out, so those are gone. No more ^3 Next is finding the like terms of ^2, do you see those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah 7x^2 and -6x^2

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Nice! So let's add those (7x^2) + (-6x^2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

85?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

You want to add these two terms together. A +(-) equals a negative, right? So it's 7x^2 - 6x^2. Now when you subtract these two things, you only subtract the whole numbers and leave the X^2 alone. What would you get then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh so its 1

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yep, then you leave the x^2 alone, so you get 1x^2, also known as just x^2 Now do you see anymore like terms, or is that is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats it

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Right! So let's take the -10x and the +12 and have it be as it is We then make our new equation x^2 - 10x +12 would be the simplified version That make sense on how it was made?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that makes perfect sense

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Awesome! Glad I could help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are a life saver! Thank you so much!!!
