OpenStudy (sammyalabamy):

how you would calculate the % yield of hydrogen if 40.0 grams of magnesium react with an excess of nitric acid producing 1.70 grams of hydrogen gas. Mg + 2 HNO3 → Mg(NO3)2 + H2

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

First, balance the reaction. Can you do that step?

OpenStudy (gebooors):

Calculate number of moles of Mg. from equation you see, amount of H2 is equal. Then calculate mass of H2. This is maximum (theoretical) mass of H2. Yield % = (1.70 g / theoretical mass) * 100 %
