Awolflover1, I don't think the term 'What do you think?' helps students. They ask to seek help; not sarcasm. Anyway, do you know the three terms scientist use to describe volcanoes, depending on their stages of activity? - active: a volcano that has been erupting recently and or shows signs of erupting soon in the future. - dormant: one that scientist expects to erupt or waken in the future. This volcano may not of had any 'recent' eruptions, it's like the volcano is sleeping! - extinct: Most likely not going to be active, or erupt, ever again. Now that is out of the way, you can infer that its a dormant volcano. This was just a little background that could help you better, so you can disregard that if you please. I would say to cross out the 'explosive' eruption answers since there wasn't any, just lava flowing out and smoke. You didn't state that it made noise. Difference between explosive and non-explosive: -Explosive eruptions have magma that is more viscid, or goey, because it has more silica in it than non-explosive. It is cooler, and has more gas. Since you see the word ‘explosive’ you can infer that it has to go with BOOM! Which, in fact, you are right. The mixture of thickened lava with LOTS of gas builds up with a big portion of pressure. This causes more loud explosive eruptions. They most likely come along subduction zones. Such as Mt. St. Helens! -Non explosive eruption are usually hotter magma, which consists of less silica and less gas. This mixture makes thinner lava that currents down the volcano easier, with quiet eruptions. Like the types in Hawaii! Summary: Explosive eruptions are more louder than Non explosives depending on how much silica it uses and the temperature.
