As 390 g of hot milk cools in a mug, it transfers 30,000 J of heat to the environment. What is the temperature change of the milk? The specific heat of milk is 3.9 J/g•°C. Show your work for credit.

OpenStudy (farcher):

Heat lost or gained = mass X specific heat capacity X temperature change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it be 390x30,000x3.9 ?

OpenStudy (farcher):

No - the heat gained is put to the left of the equals sign. Just put the numbers in the equation I wrote and then solve for the temperature change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its change in temperature = 30000 / (390 * 3.9) which would be 19.72 degrees Celsius?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?

OpenStudy (jtfan2000):

Correct - 15210/3000 = 19.7
