Ba +2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yea... but how did you get that ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
barium would need to lose 2 electrons to have a full valence shell
OpenStudy (anonymous):
meaning..?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do you have periodic table with you?

yes i do
OpenStudy (anonymous):
barium is a group 2 element meaning it is in the second column
and all element want to be "happy" by haveing a full valence shell
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a valence shell is the outtermost shell of an electron
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and a ful valence shell has 8 electrons in totall
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and since barium is in the secend period it has 2 valence elecrtons and it would need to lose 2 or gain 6 inorder to have a ful valence shell

oh. so losing two is better since its lower yes?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and since it's easier to lose 2 it would get rid of 2 elecrtons so it would have a positive charge of 2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ahh thanks !
OpenStudy (anonymous):
np:)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and remember this
the charges are opposite if an element loses electron it has a positive charge and when elements gain electron they have a negative charge
