The Viking Leif Ericsson made his first voyage of discovery in an open boat with a single square sail in about A.D. 1000, when he was only 20 years old. The Vikings did their exploration in vessels known as longships, which were clinker-built. Each board overlapped the next, giving the ships strength and flexibility to survive the North Atlantic storms. Although some longships were 100 feet long and carried a crew of 70 or 80, Ericsson's longships were likely much smaller. The record of his voyage says his ship had a crew of just 15 men. When Columbus made his voyage in the fifteenth century, he took three ships. Together, they could carry about 250 tons of cargo and a total crew of about 90 men. Columbus himself navigated primarily with a technique known as dead reckoning, in which the navigator determines his position by calculating how far and in what direction he has traveled from his starting point. Columbus's experiments with navigation using the stars were not very successful; although, on his last voyage he did manage to determine his latitude with some accuracy. He used a new navigation tool called a quadrant. Ericsson sailed with no way to navigate. He had no compass and no way to tell the speed of the ship. He had no heavy caravels full of supplies, no below-deck shelter from the weather, and no navigation charts. He had just the traditional knowledge and hard-won experience of the kendtmand, the "man who knows the way," and the hardiness of a small and determined crew of warriors.
