(Fan & Medal) Crushing Can: http://youtu.be/SBpqT-u8sjo 1. Explain why the can collapsed using the Combined Gas Law where T1 is the initial temperature of the air inside the can before the can was inverted and T2 is the temperature of the air inside the can after it was plunged into the ice water. 2. Why did the can need to be inverted? 3. Adding water to the can and boiling it pushes the air molecules out of the can. Why is this step needed?
i know how to answer this as we just did it in lcass last week; will post anser ina few
I had to do this assignment in chemistry yesterday 1.) When the can was put over the flame it caused the temperature to rise which increased the pressure. When the pressure was increased the particles inside the can speed was increased. When the can was put into ice water the temperature drastically decreases so, the pressure decreases inside as well. Now the pressure inside of the can is lower than the pressure on the outside of the can. So, this caused the can to collapse. 2.) The can had to be inverted so that the air in the can would not escape so, it would cool fast. 3.) If water was not boiled then the reaction wouldn't happen because if the air molecules are still in the can so, there would be more pressure and the can will not collapse this was my answers
