so essentially the atomic number is the number of protons and electrons. which is written at the bottom. every element on the periodic table has the same number of protons and electrons. for calcium it's 20. the number on the top 42 is the number of protons+neutrons, or mass number. protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus.
