Which polynomial is 3x – 1 a factor of? 6x2 + 10x – 4 9x2 +12x – 3 9x2 + 3x – 5 6x2 + 7x – 6
BRILL MY FAV @hippo211 you're in good hands
What you can do to find this is either divide the polynomials by 3x-1 Or you can find the value of x in this case, which is 1/3, then plug into each equation and work out If you get 0 that means that 3x-1 IS a factor
thank you
i don't understand?
It depends on which way you want to do it The first way is more complicated but less tedious and the second way is simple but tedious
Oh in that case How would you solve 3x-1=0?
x=-1/3
I set it equal to zero because that is how you would solve a real polynomial when you factor Is it -1/3 or 1/3? :)
-1/3
*cough* the remainder theorem *cough*
1/3?
Yep
Ok so now if you input 1/3 for x you SHOULD get 0 for a value, because you set it equaled zero in the factor, so input 1/3 for x in all the equations, if the outcome of one of them is 0 then that is the right answer
is it the first one because that what I got?
Yep that looks about right Good job :)
And yes jdoe001 is right the method you used is called remainder theorem
