RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

Ions are formed when: an atom gains or loses electrons an atom gains or loses protons an atom gains or loses neutrons an atom gains or loses any of the subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, and electrons) D right? @Sweetburger

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

I don't exactly remember what happens when you start losing protons and neutrons, but I think it turns into nuclear reactions. Ions are only formed from the gain or loss of electrons. Chemical reactions in general will be considered the exchanges of electrons between compounds/atoms.

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

oh cool! okay i think i get it now

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

I think (im not sure) that when protons are lost or gained it is a form of nuclear reaction that results in a different element then when you started off.
