Explain (on a particle basis) how adding a solute affects a solvent’s boiling point, freezing point, and vapor pressure:
(my answer, please look over) Adding a solute creates more attractive forces between the solute and solvent, which heightens the boiling point, lowers the freezing point, and lowers the vapor pressure. The additional forces between solute and solvent, they have to be overcome for the solution to boil. Kinetic energy must be added to achieve that result. The shells of solvent molecules that surround the solute particles result in the disruption of the formation that the particles take part of as the solvent changes from liquid to solid. This makes it so that kinetic energy has to be taken away in order to freeze. Finally, the vapor pressure is lowered because the formation of the solvent shells take away the number of solvent particles that have enough kinetic energy to vaporize. (Thank you!)
nice answer. that's much more detailed than what I would have put
think about it this way. putting a solute in a solvent means that because there are more particles interactions that would not have existed in the pure solvent now exist that would require more energy to reach the boiling point.
I think of it as additional interactions that would need more energy to overcome and would lower the freezing point and increase the boiling point.
Alright. So, the increase of particle interactions from adding the solute make it so that more energy is needed to reach the boiling point.
well like more energy is needed to overcome those interactions and reach the boiling point. remember colligative properties it's just the amount of stuff you put into a solvent. not the identity of the particles.
the boiling point is higher
Oh, I see. That makes sense.
Yeah. sometimes it's better to explain things the most basic way you can. you can easily get lost in all the details.
nice
what you wrote before was great too
Alright. Thank you very much, though. You helped me to understand it better.
