H3PO4, Phosphoric acid, is used in detergents, fertilizers, toothpastes and flavoring in carbonated beverages. Calculate the percent composition by mass to two decimal places of H, P and O in this compound.

OpenStudy (edliu95):

Ok, so in order to determine percent composition of the compound, you'll need to know the mass that you are working with, in this case since no mass is given, let's assume that it is 1 mole of H3PO4, first calculate the molar mass of the compound.

OpenStudy (haileyd):

Thanks

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The mass percent composition of a compound is independent of a quantity of a sample. It is a fixed ratio between the atoms in the compound and thus no mass given is necessary. You only need the molar mass, the link i posted shows this.
