OpenStudy (littlemisshermione):

Substances held together with only Van der Waal's forces, such as methane, CH4, have relatively low melting and boiling points. Is this true of false? Help please?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

@LittleMissHermione

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

Yes this is true because Van der Waal forces are very weak intermolecular forces. Since they are very weak very less amount of energy is required to overcome them. As a result mp and bp gets very low for substances held together only by VDW forces

OpenStudy (littlemisshermione):

@aaronq I thought it was true because Van der Waals forces are really weak so it would take less energy to break them apart...?

OpenStudy (littlemisshermione):

@FaiqRaees Thanks!
