What is https://static.k12.com/bank_packages/files/media/mathml_7192a9e5081498b8de85a6c773ad844d032dd194_1.gif when z = −3?

OpenStudy (karamarie02):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

We have the equation of 4z-3/z+6 \[f(z) =\frac{ 4z-3 }{ z+6 }\]

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

I set it up as f(z) to help show how to substitute the variable in. When z = -3, it then becomes f(-3), you will then subsitutute -3 where z appears.

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

For example, we have the equation of 2x+3 when x = 2 So f(x)=2x+3 f(2)=2(2)+3 .

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

Once you substitute the variable in for the given "Z" values, you may then solve.

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

It will either be a fraction, of if evenly dividable, e.g 10/2, a whole number. :-) If you need help working it out, let me know.

OpenStudy (luckyness):

Plug in all of the "z" with the number it gave you. \[\frac{ 4*-3-3 }{ -3+6}\] Solve for that: = -5 Final answer: -5

OpenStudy (luckyness):

Was that correct?

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

\[\frac{ -15 }{ -3+6}\]

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

When we simplify the top variables, we get -15. Next, to the bottom

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

\[\frac{ -15 }{ 3}\]

OpenStudy (maddy1251):

Then simplify ; you get -5. Yes @Luckyness you are correct.

Thanks!
