This shape is called a trapezoid. There is a formula for a trapezoid. in this case there is no need to break up the figure into simpler shapes.

The two vertical sides of 8 in. and 11 in,. are called the bases. In the formula, they are a and b. Start by adding a and b, so add 8 in. and 11 in. Then multiply by the height, h. Your height is 4 in. Then divide by 2.

no we have worked out 8 + 1 by 19 now we multiply that by 4 then finally we divide by 2.

thats it another way to have done this would be to split it up into a rectangle and a triangle and add these 2 areas. But its easier to use the formula for area of a trapezoid.
