The first rule of factoring is to try to factor a common factor out of all terms. Is there a common factor of 4, 12, and 16?

Yes, so you can take out a 4. \(\large - 4y^2 + 12y - 16\) \(\large = 4(-y^2 + 3y - 4)\) Since we see that the choices have a factor of -4 pulled out, not 4, let's factor out a -1 out: \(\large = -4(y^2 - 3y + 4)\)
