hint: what is the name for this class of figures? Name them individually and something interesting should come out.
solids?
give me more description. What do you call the 3rd one, for example?
triangular prism
yup what's the name of the fifth one?
is it a rectangular prism
it is. the rest, the first and the fourth, hexagonal and octagonal prism, the second a cube. What do they have in common?
they are plane figures?
not quite. Think about the names we did...what did most names you assigned have in common?
oh, they are prisms
Exactly. All of them are prisms (even the cube - though it's not called square prism). Basically a prism just has a common cross sectional area throughout. Now question, what was different about the names?
the regular shapes like triangles, or rectangles
pretty much the regular base of the prism can change, but it's still a prism. Compared to the other big class, pyramids, the cross section area of the base is the same throughout. Pyramids start of large at base and small at the tip.
