What is so special about the triangles in a? They are right triangles with 45 degree angles which means that the complementary angles are equal (45 degrees) and the side are equal. For the smaller triangle both sides are 7 and the hypotenuse is therefore 7*sqrt2 (7 times the square root of 2). We don't have to do the calculation we just know it because it is a special triangle, a right isoceles triangle. Since the larger triangle is also a right isoceles trinagle we know that its sides are the same as the hypotenuse of the smaller triangle so x would be that value times the sqrt2 or x=7*sqrt2*sqrt2 the sqrt2 times itself is just 2 so x=7*2=14 What is special about the triangle in b? It is a right triangle with one complementary angle of 60 degrees which means it is a 1:2:3 right triangle meaning the angles have that ration to each other 30:60:90. We know that the ratio of the sides are 1:sqrt3:2 That means if the hypotenuse is 10 or 2*5, then x=(sqrt3)*5=8.66 and y=1*5=5 I think what they want you to do is familiarize yourself with what special triangles are and what their properties are. It hearkens back to a time before mathematicians figured out how to calculate angles and sides for any triangles so they concentrated on triangles that had special traits like equal sides/angles or "special" ratios.
