Choose an alkane that is 6 to 10 carbon atoms in length. List the alkane's name and the other isomers you can properly draw and name. For example: Decane / isomer 2 methyl-Nonane. Do not guess. Draw out on paper then name for best results. Include the drawing of the alkane and the proper isomers.
Basically an alkane is a straight chain of saturated hydrocarbon (therefore can be expressed by drawing simply the carbon atoms). Isomers are trimming the carbon chain and grafting it elsewhere so that a new molecule is formed, and which does not repeat (topologically) what was listed before. For example, the two following are identical: |dw:1464378754367:dw| because you can "bend" the bond to make them topologically the same. But the following are different: |dw:1464378824512:dw| because no matter how you bend it, you cannot make it the same as the straight one. Since you need to draw everything out, you need to first understand it. A detailed explanation of what alkanes are can be found : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkane and steps to find isomers ("cousins" of alkanes) can be found here. http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/101/organic/faq/listing-isomers.shtml
