Oxidation of Beta-carotene

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

If the product is oxidised with hot KMnO4, how many products will have a ketone functional group?

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

I am fine here and besides chemistry group is dead right now.

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

I have got it to 8 but somehow the answer is 6

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

smh typical of someone like you. posting in the wrong section like this.

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

Umm... mind your own business

OpenStudy (photon336):

I was looking at this for a while so we're using hot KMnO4

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

Yes so rupture of bonds

OpenStudy (photon336):

usually KMNO4 hot when reacting with an alkene will produce a carboxylic acid, will oxidize it down all the way.

OpenStudy (faiqraees):

but thats not the case if the product is ketone

OpenStudy (photon336):

"usually" i feel it depends on how many hydrogens that you have too. Here's what I think happens for this part of the molecule. |dw:1464979849853:dw|

OpenStudy (photon336):

there aren't any hydrogens at the double bond so it oxidizes it to a ketone and goes no further. |dw:1464979951567:dw|
