OpenStudy (faiqraees):

If the product is oxidised with hot KMnO4, how many products will have a ketone functional group? I have got it to 8 but somehow the answer is 6

OpenStudy (gollywolly):

I believe you have to have that methyl group hanging off one side of each to form a keytone RCR.

OpenStudy (gollywolly):

Otherwise it would just make an aldehyde I think.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Hm if the answer is 6, then the rings at the ends should produce 1 ketone each and something else, either remain as an alcohol (perhaps become tertiary through a methyl shift), become an aldehyde or even an acid. Work out the mechanism for the oxidation of the double bonds at the ring and see what is plausible.
