please help this is very important:) Solve the following system of equations using matrices. x + 3y = 13 2x - y = -9

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

Matrices? Not familiar with the concept although I can tell you the solution.

OpenStudy (katiepowell):

what is it?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

Using matrices, just make a grid of numbers and work on that grid instead.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

To set up your problem just get rid of all the variables and operator signs, keeping the coefficients.

OpenStudy (katiepowell):

well thank you both:)

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

\(\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 3 & 13\\ 2 & -1 & -9 \end{pmatrix}\) then you will want to put it in what is called row-reduced echelon form, to which this site might help: http://www.math.odu.edu/~bogacki/cgi-bin/lat.cgi?c=rref You'll want to enter your matrix in there - it's 2 rows by 3 columns. Let us know what you get. You should get \(\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 & a\\ 0 & 1 & b \end{pmatrix}\) where x=a is the answer to x, and y=b is the answer to y.

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

the website will automatically generate a solution for the actual matrix "solving"
