Given four functions, place them in order of their y-intercept, from highest to lowest.
@phi
@jhonyy9
any idea what the y-intercept is for f(x) ?
2
for g(x), the y-intercept is the number you get when x=0 what is 8*20^0 ? remember a number to the 0 power is 1
160
8*20^1 is 8*20 = 160 what is 20^0 ?
20
remember a number to the 0 power is 1
ohhhh so its 20
or 160
you are stubborn. 20^1 is 20 20^2 is 20*20 20^0 is not 20 (and it's not obvious, so read what I posted up above)
lol im sorry im confusing myself its 1
yes. so 8*20^0 is 8*1 = 8 that is the y-intercept for g(x)
i feel dumb now haha i promise i knew this been taking a math test for 3 hrs
okay
any guess for y-intercept of h(x) ?
5?
yes, 5. I think they assume x is "time" and we start at "time 0" i.e. x=0 and at the start x=0 we have 5, so that is the y-intercept (the value when x is 0)
okay then the last one
for j(x) I look at the pattern "backwards" 2,4,8,... any guess what the next number is ?
2?
2,4,8, 2? I see a different pattern: I look to "add the same number" as in 2 to 4 add 2, then 4+2 = 6 oops, does not match 8 then I look for "multiply by the same number" 2 to 4, 2*2 = 4 4*2 = 8, that works so I would use that as the pattern
still not getting the int
2,4,8,... what number do you multiply each number to get the next number ?
2
and if you use that with 8, what is the next number after 8?
16
so the pattern for j(x) is x j(x) 0 16 1 8 2 4 3 2 now we can see what the y-intercept is
ok so it is 16
can you help with one more problem please?
now, they want the functions sorted big intercept to small
i got that part
can you just help with my last question
@phi
it seems to be missing info
thats the whole question im very confsed
it does not give us the starting temperature.
what would be the best to put as a guess lol
it's goofy. But based on the answers, I would let x=5 and figure out (0.5)^(x-10) what do you get ?
32
then they say it cools an additional -x-1 with x= 5 , that gives -6 so I guess the answer is 32-6
