OpenStudy (dawnp):

Classify and explain why each of the following is either a mixture or a compound: air, CO, and pure water.

OpenStudy (chpatterson):

Yes, I can classify the following substances as mixtures or compounds. Air-mixture, CO-compound, SnF2-compound, water-mixture. The compound is chemically combined where as the mixture is simply mixed together.

OpenStudy (the_messed_up_kid):

Air does not have a fixed composition. Its composition varies from place to place. Therefore it is a mixture. CO It is not a mixture as you can't separate out the carbon from the oxygen as the two are joined. SnF2, which represents tin(II) fluoride, is a chemical compound, not a mixture. A compound is a type of molecule that is bound together with chemical bonds, while in a mixture, the different components are mixed together, but not bonded. Distilled water is pure liquid H2O, which makes it a compound. It is not a mixture because it only contains one type of molecule.
