Start with the continuity part. It has to be continuous at x=1, since that's the boundary between the two functions. So plug in x=1 into both, and set them equal to each other: \[\large (1)^2 -2(1)-a = -(1)^2 +b(1) +2\]and simplify as far as you can\[\large -2 = a+b\]Now we can move onto the differentiability part.

Differentiable means the derivatives of both at must be equal, so find the derivatives, then plug in x=1 and set them equal Derivative of the top one is 2x - 2 Derivative of the bottom one is -2x +b \[\large 2(1) - 2 = -2(1) + b\]Now you can solve for b, then go back above and solve for a.
