What is sodium amalgum

OpenStudy (natalief):

During the process of Electrolysis of brine ( concentrated sodium chloride ), and the electrolysis takes place in flowing mercury cell, mercury( in liquid state ) acts as the cathode and titanium acts as the anode. Sodium is preferentially discharged at the mercury cathode : Na+(aq) + e- -> Na (s) Then the sodium ( in soild state ) combined with mercury ( in liquid state ) to form sodium amalgam (Na/Hg (l) ) Na(s) + Hg(l) -> Na/Hg (l) Hope this can help.
