What is the difference between a Metathesis Reaction and a Redox Reaction? How can you tell by looking at it and what are the steps?

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

In a Redox reaction the elements in the reactants have a different oxidation state that the same elements in the products. In a Metasthesis reaction the oxidation states of the elements remain the same after the reaction

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

@cuanchi when you say elements, do you mean just one or compounds like NaCl ?

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

there is a difference between elements and compounds. Compounds are made of two or more elements Elements are the ones listed in the Periodic Table. When I said Elements I am talking about the ones in the periodic table.

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

In a metathesis reaction, the oxidation numbers are unchanged. Ex. NaCl + AgNO3 ---> NaNO3 + AgCl(s) In Redox reaction however, the oxidation numbers change. Ex. H2 + O2 ---> H2O https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081007210348AADC8sJ

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

do you know the rules to calculate the oxidation states of an element in a compound?
