OpenStudy (df001):

The formula for methane gas is ch4. What does the formula 4ch4 represent?

OpenStudy (df001):

The formula for methane gas is \[CH _{4}\] What does the formula \[4CH _{4}\] represent?

OpenStudy (df001):

Answer Choice: A) 4 Molecules, each containing a carbon and a hydrogen atom. B) 4 Molecules, each containing a carbon atom and 4 hydrogen atoms. C) An inorganic compound with ionic bonds D) A molecule with 4 carbon atoms and 16 hydrogen atoms E) A molecule with 4 Carbon atoms

OpenStudy (df001):

I believe \[4CH _{4} \] is 4 carbon and 16 hydrogen. Please tell me if I am correct. My answer key says B is the answer but I insist.

OpenStudy (saksh1998):

no it will be b as the number 4 represents the stoichiometric coefficient

OpenStudy (saksh1998):

by the same principle which we use while writing a chemical equation i.e when we write C3H8 + 5O2 --> 4H2O + 3CO2 we mean that we are taking 1 molecule of C3H8 to react with 5 molecules of O2 to produce 4 molecules of water and 3 molecules of CO2

OpenStudy (saksh1998):

THANK U

OpenStudy (nduong21):

4 molecules of CH4
